A pysanka (Ukrainian: писанка, plural: pysanky) is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated using a wax-resist (batik) method. The word comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax.

Discovering memories

My Giddu, my Father's, father came to Australia after the second world war after having lost his family in the Ukraine. I don't remember anything about him, as he passed away when i was very young, but i have a strong memory of seeing an egg with an intricate design of blue and white. Although nothing else in this memory is clear, i remember this egg and that's when i fell in love..... with pysanky.
Many years later and i have my own family and i have gone over this memory many times in my head and finally decided to research what this beautiful egg actually was. I knew it had something to do with my Giddu and it being something they did back in the Ukriane. And through the wonderful world wide web i finally found out what i had fallen in love with all those years ago. So i went on a hunt for supplies and brought a basic starter kit from a Ukrainian shop in Victoria. And the journey began..........
